Sharm celebrates Earth Day 70s style
To commemorate the 40th birthday of Earth Day, a number of leading diving centres in Sharm el Sheikh joined up to create an event raising money and awareness for Project Aware.
The theme of the night was the 70s, taking people back in time, 40 years to when the concept originated. Not needing much of an excuse to party: 350 people hit the beach and ‘danced for earth’.
The inspiration for the event was from Vicki Jarman at Red Sea Diving College who was amazed at the success of the evening. Supported by seven other leading dive centres, providing sponsorship; advertising: and more importantly enthusiasm and people: the night was destined to dazzle.
Despite the meteoric rise of Sharm el Sheikh as a tourist resort, the evening provided a clear indication that the town still maintains a very strong and passionate diving community. With over 350 divers and dive professionals in attendance to support Project Aware it looks like the Red Sea has an army of defenders.
Terry Johnson; regional manager for PADI, said: “The evening was an outstanding success. Project Aware are extremely grateful to everyone that participated in the organisation of the evening.”
Raising over £850 a huge thanks must go out to all of those who helped with the evening; Red Sea College, Anthias Divers, Camel Dive Club, Colona Divers, Emperor Divers, Ocean College, Oonas Dive Club and Sinai Divers. The venue was perfect, provided by Fernando restaurant and Ultima Spiaggia Beach, but most importantly the DJ, Disco Dave, was legendary, spinning the decade’s classics until the early hours of the morning. Without Dave’s energy (and stunning Saturday Night Fever suit) the evening would have simply been a group of divers gathered on a beach wearing some rather odd attire.
