HEPCA delivers 'ultimatum' to Sharm shark killers

The Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) has delivered a final warning to those killing sharks in the Red Sea.

Following the five attacks in the Red Sea earlier this month, sharks have been indiscriminately targeted in what can only be described as revenge killings.

This is not just a case of individuals taking matters into their own hands, rather established marine organisations in the Red Sea.

According to HEPCA, both the Marine Oceanography Institute of Alexandria and the National Park Authorities of Ras Mohamaed have been involved.

On account of the fact that the catching, killing and trading of sharks were outlawed in 2006, HEPCA has insisted that any further activity will result in a call to the police.

The organisation states: “They should consider this an ultimatum and last warning before criminal charges are filed against any individuals involved in illegal shark fishing activities.

“We urge both the minister of environment and minister of higher education to intervene and stop this irresponsible act.”
