Project AWARE blog: My Ocean News
Scuba divers are among some of the most-passionate shark and ray advocates we know. We're wild about them! I know I am! That's why I'm excited about the launch of #Divers4SharksNRays - Project AWARE's latest photo campaign in the fight to save sharks and rays at risk.
In just a few weeks, the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES CoP17, 24 Sept to 3 Oct) will start! Our goal? Secure adoption of CITES Appendix II proposals for nine species of devil rays, three species of thresher sharks and the silky shark.
Project AWARE's #Divers4SharksNRays campaign offers a unique opportunity to bring the scuba diver voice to this important international forum this September and show decision makers that the dive community is serious about protecting sharks and rays from unsustainable, unmanaged and unregulated international trade.
We know from previous historic advances in international shark and ray conservation that the dive community can contribute to helping win protections for vulnerable shark and ray species. We are on a mission to convince governments to support all shark and ray proposals up for review during CITES CoP17.
Action is essential to ensure international trade in sharks and rays does not threaten their survival. Join #Divers4SharksNRays to helps us encourage Parties to CITES that the international trade of thresher sharks, devil rays and the silky shark needs regulating.
